….An adventure in history. Yet, but a blink in time…
As a Restorer who worked in the antiques trade for 35years as well as working with my Father at Hubbard Antiques of Leominster, I have gained a huge appreciation and knowledge for Early Furniture, collectibles and rare items. Hubbard Antiques were members of the BADA as well as LAPADA and CINOA, specialising in Early English Oak and Welsh Country Furniture. For me, the enjoyment comes from finding beautiful objects which are steeped in history, like a one off Snuff Box, Opium Bottle or Tobacco Rasp hand carved by a Sailor on a long and arduous journey away from loved ones at sea. There are many types of these so called “Love Tokens” and utilitarian pieces. Some more intricate items were either commissioned in port in a far off land or bought on the Quay side from talented traders selling “Tourist” gifts much the same as today, although, of course, then they would be beautifully hand made and could be personalised whilst the ship was in Port. I often wonder if these collectables could talk, what stories would they tell? There are still many treasures as yet undiscovered, just waiting for the next collector to come along. After all we are only custodians for the next generation. The trick is to recognise the value and authenticity of these items, to be able to buy them and successfully market them. Originality, form and colour are ALL important factors to me as well as Patination. Buying these pieces, marketing them and ultimately selling them is a “buzz” only a true dealer gets.
