Superbly executed 17th Century carving of St. Jerome in original polychrome retaining most of it’s untouched vibrance of colour. Clutching a Skull and stone with a Lion at his feet. St. Jerome was said to be preaching one day when a Lion came limping into the camp. Whilst everyone was frightened and ran St. Jerome bent down and removed a thorn from the Lions paw. It is said the Lion never left his side again. St. Jerome is famous for translating Hebrew Script into various languages including the Bible into Latin. He is often pictured holding a Skull, a sign of Knowledge and teaching and the stone that he holds is a symbol of mortification and self-punishment, used to hit himself on the chest in penance to avoid the visions of pleasure that interrupted his meditations. At 25 cm’s this is a superb size of early polychrome work.
