Fabulous C17th Deed box of superior construction. Inch thick boards ‘through’ Dovetailed on all four sides. The front carved deeply with a central rosette surmounted on either side with a stylised tree of life within a knull carved sweeping geometric arch. The base ovolo moulding also with chip carving. The heavy inch thick top with thumb mould and applied overlapping mould to protect the lock catch. Large original strap hinges. Originally this would have two locks, perhaps through loss of a key one of the locks now moved to the centre with the keyholes filled. A period 1760’s oval escutcheon now in the centre. Nonetheless a a superb early oak box of small proportions. 50 cm’s wide x 23 cm’s high x 28 cm’s deep. Circa 1680-90
