The main bowl being continually carved around it’s circumference with scenes of wine drinking , grape vines and merry making, showing cloven footed Humans and mythical animals with Putti riding the animals, playing instruments and eating the grapes. The quality of the carving is exquisite. Below this incredible continuous scene the bottom section of the bowl is decorated with acanthus leaves, some of which turn outwards as if spilling over the edge. The stem of this incredible Chalice are four sumptuously carved Putti of different size, age, in various poses holding up the main bowl above them with their hands and shoulders, one on his knees, as if with all their might. Between them and their legs are more grapes and vines. This section then drops down to two lower sections one of which is again carved around the circumference with acanthus leaves echoing the base of the bowl above. The internal of the chalice has been beautifully hollowed out using a lathe. Indeed the tooling mark on the inside centre can still be clearly seen. All in all an extremely rare and beautiful piece of 17th Century Renaissance ‘treen’ The colour and patination are incredible as is the condition with only one small chip in the rim and a very narrow shrinkage gap that has been stabilised and filled in the main body. An incredible survivor. Circa 1630-40
