The box is 10 inches x 9inches x 6 inches with a sloping lift up lid which is profusely carved with Stylised Angels and birds with ribbons and a crown with G 1 and Ano 1728. The edges with chip carving. Most likely commemorating George 1st’s passing and Ascension to Heaven. The front is carved with carpenters tools of saws, planes, a square, mallet and chisels. It still has its original lock but no catch. One side has an empty X frame throne chair with a crown above, the other side has a crossed Axe and adze again with a crown above. The whole box shows signs of Polychrome paints of reds, blues and off white. There are wonderful scrolls along the feet with some loss to the front sides. The red can be seen clearly. The whole box is made from Walnut and now has a superb rich patina.
All in all a very rare survivor and unusual box of delightful size. It’s even more delightful in the flesh with only a little historic repair to the hinged lid.
