Exceptionally Rare snuff box of a ‘puffer fish’ with a bug bear face from the late 18th early 19th Century. Either made by a Sailor or Napoleonic Prisoner of War. Very unusually in Coconut shell as these bug bear are nearly always in Coquilla with portrait carving or similar. This one has been beautifully carved with fins, scales and a stunning folded over tail. Totally original staring green eyes and a red painted mouth. It is even humanised with a moustache. Bug bears were supposed to be frightening. This incredible and rare example Is in untouched original condition and a superb colour. 10 cm’s long. Rare collectors example. Never seen another in coconut. Circa 1820-30
