A truly exceptional C16th Century Snuff Mortar of some importance. Made for a very wealthy landowner or Nobleman in Walnut. It has an early Nativity scene carved around the body with beautiful figures. Bethlehem in the background. The handle of the Mortar has winged cherubs and the initials A and M. A full sunburst carving on top and sunburst behind the baby Jesus’ head, Very C16th. It is completely original, undamaged, and a beautiful colour. It is the first I have ever handled and is incredibly tactile and beautiful in the hand. It dates to around 1560-80 and most likely Italian…….
