The very best Figural Coquilla snuff Gentleman I’ve ever seen. Most likely a Sailors Grotesque Caricature of a Sea Captain or Port Merchant with his Bicorne Hat. Incredible detail throughout, from his chequered waistcoat with buttons to his cravat. His shoes and cravat are of Marine Ivory as are all the buttons. The detail is phenomenal. Probably commissioned, It is possibly too good to be sailor made!! It is made from a large whole Coquilla Nut with his legs as original add ons as these could not be carved from a single nut without breaking into the centre. The back has an integral hinge. He is perfect and untouched throughout!! Most likely made as a type of table snuff ornament as he is just too good and large to have fitted in a pocket. He was made to be seen!! A truly beautiful and rare piece. The very best……Circa 1800
