Very Rare, possibly unique, C18th “Sands of Time” Memento Mori. Two skulls in the form of a sand timer carved from one piece of fruitwood. Almost certainly Sailor carved on a long voyage, naively but beautifully carved possibly as a gift or reminder. Ordinary God fearing folk were very aware of “Remember, one day we must die” and so Memento Mori pieces were extremely fashionable in all sorts of forms. This form being highly unusual. Exceptional colour and standing only 18 cm’s tall it is in untouched original condition and has a wonderful patination. Circa 1720-40, possibly earlier as the form of carved hourglass has the shape of the joined Globes with wax and string knop………..
