Extremely Rare Continental Georgian ‘Squash’ Tea Caddy

Exceptionally Rare Georgian Continental Squash Tea Caddy in totally original unrestored condition. Superb green tinted and mottled finish as with a real Squash displaying a fantastic patination. Original hinge, lock and catch. There is a key but this doesn’t seem to ‘lock’ the lid. The stalk is of a kind only found on this version of caddy and is in untouched original condition with wonderful finish matching the rest. There are traces of the tin liner but is mainly back to timber with a lovely dry surface. The base has it’s original green paper pad. Circa 1800

Although some of the ‘Fruit’ Caddies are thought to be Continental there was a trend in Georgian England to make Novelty fruit shapes. Drinking tea was a rich man’s past time as initially it was extremely expensive. Tea Caddies come in many weird and wonderful shapes and material, from ivory, tortoise shell and Mother-of-Pearl to exotic woods. The fruit shapes come under the category of both Novelty and exotic with some fruits, shapes being rarer than others……
