£16,950.00

P.O.A.

A extremely Fine and very Rare 17th Century Charles 11 Table Standing Cabinet in fine original condition. Beautifully foliage strap carved door with moulded cushion fronted centre and original iron butterfly hinges with Rose head nails. Superb original ‘Ovolo’ moulded cornice with top board, the waist stepped moulded with a lower moulded front single drawer with original drop handles. The base moulding sits above four beautifully turned original bun feet. The internal with ten various size oak lined drawers with original brass handles. Above the internal drawers is a ‘secret’ half shelf. Whether intended or not there is a space below the large drawer although this has never been lockable so may be a coincidence, maybe for papers or love letters. The door retains the original lock, albeit it a right handed lock which was fitted on the left (upside down originally) along with the escutcheon which has ne’er been moved. Totally original back boards and base as well as internal partition timber along with the beautifully patinated top board and superb cornice mouldings.

The proportions of this significant cupboard are perfection, the colour and patination second to none.

In a Private Oak collection since 1996 the colour and condition are second to none.

A very rare and beautiful cupboard of some stature and importance……indeed museum quality, most likely for valuables in a Ladies chamber rather than a spice cupboard. It should be noted that this fine piece should not be mistaken for a ‘Spice’ cupboard (No central space for apothecary’s Pestle and Mortar) Circa 1660-1680
