Stunning Italian Wedding Box, given by the Groom to His Bride as a Love Token on their wedding day. Only the wealthiest families could afford such a gift. It would contain all sorts of jewellery and precious stones as wedding gifts. The front is carved with a spoon and fork with a central heart and the date 1885. The back is carved with the wedding ‘breakfast’ table. The top carved with grapes, flowers and vines. The inside covered in a material for jewellery. Made entirely from fruitwood (pear) I think, it has taken on a beautiful colour and patination. It has original hinges and a lock, although no key. A stunning and beautifully detailed dated box. 1885
