Incredibly Rare ‘Nosegay’ showing an intricate Nativity Scene on the lid. Three wise men, Angel Gabriel, shepherd and Three Wise Men all around Baby Jesus carved on the size of a match box!! On the base which is pierced is a bird of Paradise holding a bunch of grapes. The rest of the box is adorned with Acanthus leaves and other decoration of fabulous quality. A Nosegay was a type of Vinaigrette or scented box and would have contained a fragment smelling piece of cloth. The user would keep this in his pocket to avoid the pungent smells of the time. The streets would be littered with sewage waste and sometimes death, during Pandemics the dead were left outside to be collected. This is a very rare and beautiful example in perfect condition. Circa 1760-80
