An absolutely stunning and extremely rare early C19th Snuff Mull in Horn, cut out and carved from the solid in the form of a Scottish Rams Horn Mull. Cantonese carved beautifully from the curled ‘tail’ with superb foliate carving to the intricate depiction of traditional Chinese buildings and figures amongst trees, towards the lid. The domed cover with hinge also showing conforming carving amongst a white metal mount with thumb lift. Truly incredible throughout and possibly unique…….
An incredibly Rare and possibly unique case of the Chinese copyist’s art where it can be assumed that a Scottish Mariner has commissioned one of the many skilled Cantonese carvers to copy and interpret his Rams horn snuff mull. From the 18th and throughout the 19th century there was a huge Chinese export export trade developed on the back of Porcelain and tea. Supercargos mediated between the masters of skilled craftsmen and western merchants, the goods being dispatched from the hongs of Canton. Circa 1820-30
