An Exquisite and very Rare C17th Century Boxwood Tri-Faced Memento Mori depicting the decomposition of the Human flesh. One side is the whole face, the other side is split down the nose so that one half is in decomposition and the other half just the skull. Carved from a solid piece of boxwood about the size of a small melon these pieces are extremely rare of this size and this is the first Tri-face I have ever seen. Memento-Mori ( remember we must die) was very popular through the ages from the 16th through to 19th centuries. Pieces of this size are also extremely rare and highly sort after. Circa 1660-80
