Incredible and Rare, early to mid C17th Boxwood Snuff Flask. The double opening flaps for two types of snuff. Most likely plain and possibly a spiced or flavoured type as was the fashion then. The top stopper reveals a hole in the neck to one side which could be used to tap out snuff onto the back of the hand. Each flap has a portrait, one of a Lady and one of a Gent so most likely a Marriage piece. The two ‘Silver’ hinges (not tested) are beautifully etched and held in place by silver pins. The body is beautifully carved with trailing stylised acanthus leaves terminating at the neck where the stopper sits like an acorn. Most likely Italian or French in origin, both being more socially advanced and using snuff a lot earlier than we here in the United Kingdom did. This piece has a very ‘Italian Renaissance’ look to it. Dating from Circa 1630-40 and in untouched original condition with a beautiful ‘soapy’ tactile patina. Being only 10cm’s tall it is truly a spectacular piece.
