An incredible early C16th or eaerlier….. Pyx or Holy Sacrament Box where Communion could be taken. The carved top shows the ‘Passion’ of Christ and the Crucifixion tools used. There are five small carved panels around the outside edge also telling the story of Christ and renaissance Italy including George and the Dragon. Beautifully carved inside the lid are the two Mary’s praying for Jesus at the foot of the cross. This box would have been used by a Priest or Monk to take Holy Communion to the sick and infirm or landed Gentry. It has an impeccable Provenance. BLUMKA (Madison Avenue New York) Carved from Cedar of Lebanon, the Holy Timber. I have never seen another carved on the inside of the lid. When lifted and facing the person taking the body of Christ it represents a small Alter. The back of the box shows a stylised Eucharist Monstrance Ostensory cross. A truly stunning very Rare museum piece. Circa 1520-40
The Hinge is probably later but handmade and 18th Century. 10cm’s x 7 cm’s x 6 cm’s
