Stunning C17th Boxwood carved knife

£3,250.00
sold out

An exquisite and most important C17th Knife carved from solid Burr Boxwood. Two lovers chained to each other around the shoulders carry a burning heart (a sign of eternal love) in their entwined hands. The two figures are beautifully carved. In a very classical stylised form, a finely carved Acanthus leaf rises from behind and over them as if to protect. The box wood handle is set into a chased and etched Silver mount which houses the tang of the knife. Being very classical style one must assume this knife to be of Italian origin. The carving is of the highest quality and was most likely commissioned as a marriage or love token piece. It is in exceptional untouched condition with no damage and no repairs. Presented on a custom made stand which is included in the sale. Standing at 24cm’s long excluding stand this piece is a must for a collector. Circa 1660-80
