Memento Mori

Although this is the second one of this type I have had for sale in the last year (see Archive) they are extremely rare and collectible. Mainly carved in Japan in the mid to late 19th Century by Netsuke carvers. There are various variations including bone snakes, fruitwood snakes. Sometimes rats. The main skull is a hand carved solid block of fruitwood with the snake added in sections. The inside (tobacco or snuff) compartment is back lacquered. The lid generally has a frog on it as a handle. This example is in immaculate condition and a superb colour.
The Victorian Period of Momento Mori was very popular and means an awareness of ones Mortality and futility in life and death. Victorians were obsessed with death. This is an extremely fine piece and completely original with beautiful colour and patination. Wonderful item for any collection of snuff boxes. Circa 1840-60.
