Superb Table Top Box Dated 1694 with the initials ES. Constructed entirely from Ash and still with ring hinges and original lock plate held on with later screws. Unfortunately the hasp is later. Original internal till for valuables, this box was more likely used for documents or silk clothes rather than a Bible. The moulding around the bottom is most likely an early C19th addition. It is a fabulous warm colour with a superb patination. Very good original carving throughout including scratch carving and punch decoration. Approx 60cm’s wide x 23cm’s high and 40cm’s deep
