Absolutely stunning Marriage Table snuff box. Possibly a gift to the Bride and Groom who are depicted in three carved and pierced medallions on the lid. The centre shows the couple mid ceremony with buglers and a loving cup, with one either side of the couple standing together. Carved all around the sides in relief is almost certainly the city where they lived. The lid opens to show a beautifully constructed wooden hinge which is carved with rings on the outside to make it look more complex than it actually is. It was originally lined with tin or thinned lead to keep the snuff or Tobacco fresh. The underside is carved with a ‘scale’ type carving. The whole box is in exceptional condition having never had anything done to it. The mellow colour and patination is also outstanding. Measuring 150mm long this was certainly an important table piece. Dating from the first half of the 18th Century. A true collectors piece. Circa 1740
