Incredible Early 17th Century Carved Communal Tobacco/Snuff Casket in Boxwood.

This important Casket of The Passion of Christ depicts the Flagellation through various carved panels around it’s exterior including, the cleansing, carrying the cross, burial in the Tomb and the resurrection. It is carved from one solid block of Boxwood. The lid which bears the Crucifixion sits on a lip and has never been hinged. It has survived in remarkable condition and is a beautiful colour and Patination. The base of the box shows Adam and Eve being tested by temptation......

As a Communal box this would have come from a very important household of some major religious stature. Maybe even a Monastery. It is almost certainly Dutch in origin. Being only 10cm’s x 7cm’s x 6.5 cm’s it packs a punch with the detail and quality. A true museum item....
