Exceptional Dated and Initialed Triple Bowl Welsh Love Spoon in original ‘Scumble’ finish

£5,850.00

Rare Dated 19th Century triple bowl Welsh ’Love Spoon’ Highly pierced with Hearts, keyhole, key, windows (church) intricate wheels, date and initials.

Made from a solid section of fruit wood and then ‘scumble’ grained to look like burr Oak. The whole of the back is completely rebated out to take a piece of card that would have been coloured. There are traces over the two windows in the middle and along the top. The ‘wheels’ were darkened to stand out against a coloured background.

I have made up an old section of card with colours to illustrate this but have no way of knowing if they are correct or not. This is mearly my interpretation and can be removed or changed. I have never seen this feature before especially on such a large spoon. The maker must have wanted it to be a striking piece for his love!!

The spoon is absolutely original and untouched except one tiny split between the spoons. Nothing else has ever Been broken or replaced. Although a later date of 1871 this remains a very interesting and rare example. I have included photos to show rebate and where a coloured paper or tissue was covering the ‘stained glass windows’

The whole spoon is original and undamaged with no restoration or re-finishing. 41 cm’s long and a very rare and impressive piece………

Over the centuries, many more symbols and motifs have been added and as the love spoons became more elaborate and decorative, they have become collectables. Here are some of the symbols, and their meanings.

  • Bell – Weddings or Anniversaries or Together in Harmony.

  • Ball in a cage – Love held safe or the number of children one wishes to have.

  • Birds – Love birds or Let’s go away together. Stork represents a new birth.

  • Chain – Signifies loyalty and faithfulness. A wish to be together forever. Can also signify the number of children one wishes.

  • Cross – A wish to have faith in Jesus Christ or a wish for God to bless.

  • Diamond – Wealth or Good fortune.

  • Heart – This is one of the most common patterns. One heart signifies that the girl/boy has taken hold of the young man/woman’s heart, and two hearts on the same spoon means that love is reciprocated.

  • Horseshoe – A symbol of Good luck and Good fortune.

  • Key/keyhole – Security or I shall look after you. The partner holds the key to his/her heart or home.

  • Celtic knot – Eternal love or Together forever or Everlasting.

  • Lock – Security or, I shall look after you
