Wonderful (Unique?) 17th Century Lignum Vitae “Monteith” possibly experimental for a Silver version used for chilling glasses. Note the water level stain mark on the inside below the shaping. Also the Cuboidal stress of the constant wetting and drying in the grain of the timber in the base.
This extremely rare and possibly unique piece should not be confused with the much more common and mostly smaller diameter “Wassail” bowl with higher sides to hold much more liquor for communal drinking, the scale of this piece is massive and magnificent!!…….Formerly from the WJ Shepherd Collection in 1983 this fine piece made £4400 incl premium and sold again at Bonhams, Bond Street, London in March 2013 for £7500 incl premium. Now nearly 10 years later it is ready to nestle into another fine collection of beautiful pieces…….it measures 10 inches tall and just over 12 inches diameter and dates from around 1680-90. A very fine and early piece with 10/10 colour and patination……..Massive Rare piece
