Exceptional Rare Early 17th Century or earlier……Sandtimer. The centre is joined by string and red sealwax. Each glass globe has a Pontil mark where it was spun and blown on a metal rod. There are various dent and imperfections to the ‘lead’ coloured glass. They are filled with a crushed white Marble (Bianca Carrara) usually mixed with crushed eggshells to give a good even flow. Very unusually this timer lifts out of its Walnut case via a steel pin and removable top. The Hexagonal sided case has a Gothicesk pierced window at each facet to be able to view the timer……….This may very well have been an Apothecary piece from a Monastery. Around the top and base of the case are steel bands keeping the sides together. The whole piece having a wonderful colour and patination.
Most likely of Italian or French origin this fantastic Rare timer dates to the mid 17th Century making it an incredible survivor!! It stands proudly at nearly 8 inches tall and is in wonderful original condition.
